Most lawns in Richmond and the surrounding counties are tall fescue. This cool-season grass stays green most of the year but struggles in the July and August heat. Some older yards and sunny slopes are Bermuda or zoysia instead. Those green up in late spring and turn tan after the first hard frost.
We set mowing height and feeding around the grass you actually have. For fescue, that means mowing at 3 to 4 inches through summer so the blades shade the roots and hold moisture.
Soil matters just as much. Richmond sits on the fall line. Yards west of the city often have heavy red clay that packs down hard. Lawns toward the East End and eastern Henrico tend to be sandier and dry out faster. We check which one you have on the first visit.
Fescue lawns in central Virginia follow a different calendar from the one many national lawn programs assume. This is roughly how we plan a season:
We take care of lawns in Richmond’s East End and across Henrico, Mechanicsville, Glen Allen, Short Pump, Lakeside, Ashland and Hanover. Visits are scheduled [add: mowing frequency, such as weekly or every other week, and the months the mowing season runs].
Some lawns need more than routine care. If a yard is too far gone to fix with seed, we handle sod installation and start fresh. Our landscape maintenance crews take care of beds and shrubs, so one company looks after the whole property.
Drainage and hardscaping are covered under the rest of our services. Every lawn starts with a free estimate, so you know what the work involves before anything is scheduled.
